How to Read and Understand Your Hearing Test Results

Many individuals leave a hearing evaluation with a printed report containing graphs and abbreviations that are difficult to interpret. It is common to listen attentively as the audiologist explains the findings, only to realise afterward that key details are not clearly remembered. However, once the structure of the report is understood, it becomes considerably easier to interpret.

What Goes Into the Report

The centrepiece of most hearing evaluations is pure tone audiometry. You sit in a quiet booth, wear headphones, and raise a hand or press a button whenever you catch a tone, even a faint one. Every response gets recorded and eventually plotted onto a graph called an audiogram. That graph is really the heart of the whole document, so it helps to understand it before anything else on the page.

Interpreting the Audiogram

An audiogram is not as intimidating as it looks once you break it down. Picture a simple grid:

  • Moving across the horizontal line, you go from low-pitched sounds to high-pitched ones, measured in Hertz.
  • Moving down the vertical line, you go from very soft sounds to very loud ones, measured in decibels.

Your results appear as small symbols on this grid, often a circle for the right ear and an X for the left. Wherever a symbol sits tells you the quietest sound that ear could pick up at that particular pitch.

Once plotted, your results usually fall somewhere along a scale that describes how much hearing loss, if any, is present:

  • 0 to 25 dB is considered within the normal range.
  • 26 to 40 dB suggests a mild loss.
  • 41 to 55 dB points to a moderate loss.
  • 56 to 70 dB falls into the moderately severe category.
  • 71 to 90 dB is regarded as severe.
  • Anything past 91 dB is classified as profound.

None of these numbers are meant to alarm you. They simply give your audiologist a starting point for deciding whether hearing aids or further evaluation would be useful.

The Type of Loss Changes the Conversation

It is not only about how much hearing loss shows up, but also where the problem originates. Broadly speaking, there are three categories:

  • Conductive loss, which happens when something in the outer or middle ear stops sound from travelling through as it should.
  • Sensorineural loss, which involves the inner ear itself or the nerve pathways carrying sound to the brain.
  • Mixed loss, which is a bit of both.

This distinction matters quite a lot, since a conductive issue might be treatable medically, while a sensorineural one usually calls for hearing devices instead.

Additional Elements in Your Report 

Some reports include extra measurements beyond the basic chart. You might come across:

  • Speech recognition scores, which show how clearly you understood words spoken at a normal volume.
  • Tympanometry readings, which check whether your eardrum is moving properly and whether your middle ear is healthy.
  • Word recognition percentages, which speak more to clarity than to volume.

Taken together with the audiogram, these give a fuller sense of how your hearing is actually functioning day to day, not just in a testing booth.

The Importance of Understanding Your Results

There is a real benefit to knowing what your own report says rather than just trusting it blindly. It means you can:

  • Ask better, more pointed questions at your next appointment.
  • Understand why a certain treatment or device is being suggested in the first place.
  • Notice if things change the next time you get tested.
  • Stop putting off decisions simply because the paperwork felt confusing.
